Need me to look over your script before you send it to a producer or agent? It needs to be perfect because you only get one chance with these people.
I've been a screenwriter for over 20 years. I'm very good at story structure, character and the nuts and bolts of the actual script format. I've done very well in some of the most prestigious screenwriting competitions and I've optioned scripts too. (Optioning is the first step to a sale.)
I know what bugs readers. The very last thing you want to do is bug the producer or director who reads your script. For example, are you misusing parentheticals? Do you have too much or not enough information in your scene headings? Are your sentences passive or active? How many ellipses have you used in your script? Too many? Not enough? (Ellipses are those dots that indicate a pause or when someone trails off….) And that’s just the formatting! Imagine the possible quicksand scenarios with a badly structured story and unconvincing characters or missing plot points. But don’t worry. It’s all fixable. Hemingway said, “The only kind of writing is rewriting,” and he’s dead right.
Two options:
Proofread – This is a thorough proofread that covers spelling, grammar, punctuation, repeated or omitted words or formatting errors. I’ll mark up your script so you can see the errors, then you can make changes to your satisfaction on your original file. $100 for a feature script up to 120 pages. $50 for TV scripts up to 60 pages. $30 for TV scripts up to 30 pages. (When I say 30 or 60 pages, I mean 30-ish or 60-ish. A few pages over is no big deal.)
Coverage - I can do a deeper, more complex evaluation of your script regarding storyline, characters, character goals/conflict, pacing, dialogue, plot points and all sorts of good but important stuff. You can digest my coverage, then it’s up to you to revise as you deem necessary. I will also email you a packet with detailed notes on all of the story concepts, formatting guidelines and writing tips I've learned over the years that will help all of your scripts look professional and make them a "good read." $250 for a full length feature, $150 for a 60 page drama, $100 for a half-hour script.
Proofreading is a good option if you are confident with your story, but not so confident with those pesky grammar and formatting rules. Readers DO notice even the tiniest irregularities or inconsistencies.
Coverage is a good option if you’re newer at screenwriting and aren’t 100% sure that you’ve nailed your story completely and you want some reassurance or help on shaky areas. Plus you’ll also get the proofreading mentioned above folded into your coverage.
What I’ve found works best is you send me a PDF of your script and I will mark that up with lots and lots of notes, corrections and suggestions, then you can make the changes yourself. (Some changes will need to be the artist’s choice, so that’s up to you to decide how to change it.)
I use Paypal and will email you a Paypal request for down payment/balance due. (Half before I start, half afterward.) You can pay through Paypal even if you don't have a Paypal account, all you need is an email address. You can use a credit or debit card.
Proofread only:
$100 for feature screenplays/full length plays.
$75 for TV dramas up to 65 pages.
$50 for TV sitcoms up to 30 pages.
Coverage & proofreading together:
$250 for a full length feature
$150 for a 60 page drama
$100 for a half-hour script.
I can usually get your script back to you in a day or two. Email me (Jan) to get the process started.
Below is a sample of how I bleed red ink all over a script. Hey, that's a good thing! You WANT me to find the errors so you can fix them, right? Trust me, I'll find them.
